Question:
Anti-depressants...does this help head hunger...going to the Dr. Tues & need advise?

I am 3 weeks post-op RNY & suffering something aweful from head hunger! I always had a history of minor depression. I was on Prozac for a while about 3 yrs. ago then for some reason it stopped working. More recently I was on Welburtin SR same story. It worked for a while then for some reason stopped working, pre-op that is. My question is do anti-depressants help with head hunger to keep it at bay? Has anyone had experience with this? I am going to my Dr. tomorrow because he has to change the Wellbutrin SR anyhow because it is no longer as effective with my RNY surgery. Anyone tired a certain anti-depressant that seemed to work well?    — Allison T. (posted on April 30, 2002)

Well I have a history of depression and eating disorders. Unforturnately about four months out the old eating disorder reared its ugly head. My doctor put me on Wellbutrin about two weeks ago and so far I DO NOT notice any difference. I think it is still early so I am going to sit it out. Who knows maybe it will happen? I think head hunger is so much more than solved with a pill. IF we could solve it with a pill I think most of us would not have resorted to this surgery in the first place. I hold out hope with my new 'tool' and the meds and possibly talk therapy I can overcome this. YOU CAN TOO! Get in touch with me if you want to talk more! Good luck~!

I guess it depends on why you are having head hunger. I am still pre-op, but I take a low dose of Celexa for depression. Your mind just may need to catch up with your new stomach. I think perhaps psychotherapy might help more than medication. But, I will tell you that I tried Wellbutrin and it didnt work for me like the Celexa. They are a different class of anti depressents. So if you DO need medication, you may just need some trial and error so don't get discouraged!
