Question:
My stomach growls when I eat
Every time I eat my stomach growls. I don't know if its the pouch or my old stomach. Is this normal? I am 3 weeks post-op from a open RNY. — Peggy D. (posted on April 29, 2002)

What that is... is air displacement...especially the smaller the pouch you
have the more that will happen as the air in your empty pouch has no where
to go but back up the esophagus. It happens to me all the time...that's
why it is important to eat slowly...especially the more solid the food
is...the slower you should eat it. It hurts when you are trying to swallow
something and it hits an air pocket that is trying to come back up.

This happened to me as well, for several weeks after surgery. I swear
there were many times I was hungrier after eating than I was before - and I
always chew very thoroughly and eat very slowly! I haven't changed
anything, but it doesn't happen to me anymore and I am only 10 weeks
post-op. I wish for you the same good fortune that it will just pass.

I had the same thing! I believe it's our 'old' stomach releasing digestive
juices... just think of Pavlov! It seemed to stop around 4 or 5 weeks post
op for me, although it happened once last week (I'm 8 weeks post-op). I
just laugh it off as my poor body is still confused as to what is going on!
