Question:
How much protein am I suppose to have post-op?
I am having a lap RNY 4/10/02 & am trying to get all my stuff together. I went to get some protein & took the sheet my Dr. gave me but it didn't say how much protein I needed per day. Any ideas? — Allison T. (posted on March 24, 2002)

I don't know about you or your doctor's recommendation, but I am 11 days
post-op and lucky if I get ANY protein! I am still on liquids, moving on
to pureed in the next day or so. I don't think you will have to worry
about your protein for at least a couple of weeks while you are recovering.
I will be around 6 weeks post-op before I really have to aim to get 65 gms
of protein a day! My focus right now is water and rest! Good luck to you
on your upcoming surgery!

If you are having a lap RNY, then you are most likely going to be a
proximal RNY.. I know that my surgeon reccomends 60 gms of protein daily
for his proximal patients, and he has them start on protein supplements and
vitamins at post op day 7, even though they are on clear liquids for the
first 4 weeks.. You need to make sure that you get pre digested whey
protein powders for this 60 gms.. that is two shakes per day..
Good luck to you

Check out this Protein Calculator, it's really great. I had been told I
needed 60-70 grams per day, and was getting that in no problem, BUT - I was
plagued with incessant hair loss and it was really bugging me, so I started
doing my homework, yet again, and found out that everyone has different
protein requirements and because I'm such an "Amazon" I require
97 grams a day! Once I got my protien intake up, my hair loss vanished!
