Question:
Why can I eat less now than a month or so ago?

I am 3 months post-op. My surgery & recovery were uneventful. I've noticed the last 2 weeks or so that I can eat only 2-3 bites of food before I either feel full to bursting or downright uncomfortable. I feel fine otherwise, and I do feel better about 10-15 minutes after the first few bites. I try & finish my meal because I have to eat to live and lose, but wonder why now I can eat less than say, six weeks ago. Any advice?    — scottiemaam O. (posted on January 10, 2002)

Have you changed what you are trying to eat? I am 9 1/2 weeks out and I have a real problem with a lot of foods, especially meats. At first I thought I was not able to eat as much. But, if I switch back to soups and crunchy foods, I can eat the same as before or even more. If you can't eat the same amount of foods that you have already eaten, I would mention this to your doctor.

That is exactly like me! I am three months out (open rny) and have been experiencing being able to eat only a little, just like when I first had the surgery! I don't have any answers, but maybe it's normal?

I don't have an answer but am 3 months out myself the 12th of Feb. I find I can only eat a fraction of an ounce of real food or get sick. The crunchy and sweet things go down to good. Tonight I tried to eat a slice of fresh tomato and it about killed me. I think my little tummy doesn't want me to eat real food.

I am also 3 months as of tomorrow and have also found that approximately 3 small bites and I am full. If I eat more I will get sick and throw up.

I have found that over the past 10.5 months the quantity I have been able to eat has fluctuated and even changes throughout the day. In the morning I can only eat a few bites, at lunch usually a cup to 1 1/2 cups, and at dinner about a cup--sometimes less. I went through a period where I could eat A LOT and it scared me, but then it went back down. I have gone through times where I didn't feel like eating more than a few bites. If it continues, you may want to talk to your dr to make sure your stoma isn't narrowing. How about liquids? Do they go down as they should? It could be part of the normal process that your body goes through to adjust but if it continues I would say get it checked out. Happy losing!
