Question:
Why do some physicians say no to protein drinks?
I realize that all physicians have different post op diets, but I can't understand why some are so adamantly against protein drinks. What is up with that? I would think that nutrition, even in liquid form is better then nothing. — Gina L. (posted on November 15, 2001)

Some doctors are against protein drinks because it is easy to make a 150
calorie healthy drink into a 900 calorie 'Jamba juice' type drink with
fruit and additions very easily. I have read where in hopes of making the
drinks taste better, people scoop sugar free ice cream into the protein
drink and add entire bananas, strawberries and SF chocolate syrup...yeow!
I cannot imagine why a surgeon would be against a healthy, low cal, protein
packed drink to boost protein levels. Sometimes I think they have these
beliefs because they havent had the surgery and dont realize how tough it
is to get 70 grams of protein in food only.
I have had a breakfast shake every morning for the 5 months since I have
had my surgery. Mine taste like a Dairy Queen shake with minimal fruit...
the secret is natural extracts!

Real food is complete, all of the enzymes etc. Shakes are not. Eating
real food trains you for a new life. Protein shakes continue with the fast
food Idea.
