Iron tranfusions, infusions, injections??

For those of you who have had the iron injection or infusion or transfusion will you please explain what they are like, how they are done and what side effects if any did you have. How long did it take for your levels to rise to normal or just above? I take ferrous gluconate, 4 pills a day and levels are consistently between 8 and 9 with 12 being the begining of normal. I need a better way to get my iron up. I need some info about other methods of iron delivery to pass along to my doc. Any links would be welcome.
