What are sugar alcohols?

What are they called on an ingredient label? Are they OK for us postops? Do they have calories? I live in Canada and we have a very limited choice when it comes to sf foods. There are many sf foods I see listed here from US members but are not available to us in Canada. Many are not available because some of the ingredients are not made here, some ingredients are banned as food additives. Sf Carnation instant breakfast is one example.
