Is too much possible?

I'm basically at the point of waiting on my insurance company to approve me and I was wondering about weightlifting. I was hoping that after losing weight I could put on muscle and have a nice body. Is it possible to gain good muscle tone and definition since your body doesnt absorb nutrients/protiens the way that it should? I also dont want to lose too much weight and have a problem there from weight lifting. Also, will I ever be able to compete in sports? Football for example? Any help will be appreciated.
