I think my job is on the line. Will the American Disablilties acts protect me?

I have been going to the doctor for other problems and also it has beed recommended that I have this surgery. However everytime I go to the doctor my boss has a severe chip on her shoulder. The company has had some layoffs and I am scared I am going to be one if I tell them that I am going to have surgery soon. She does not know what for and I dont think I need to tell her. Some one told me that the American disabilities act should protect me. Is this true? Thank you,
