Should I break large calcium pills up?

I've been taking calcium pills and skin,hair, and nails vitamins for the last 6 or so months. My surgery is coming up and the more I think about the vitamins, the more scared I get about taking them. Do they have the same effect if you cut them up? Or should I look for liquid/chewable vitamins?? Thanks a lot.
