Question for Catholic Post Ops- about Communion

I have a question for Catholic post-ops: What about Communion and wine from the chalice? Do you break the wafer into pieces...I've always been taught and believed that you eat the whole thing before you sit down. It would seem weird to be sitting in the pew tearing up "Christ's body"! What about the wine? I guess a tiny sip wouldn't hurt or will it (literally!)?
