Waiting for insurance to become effective Feb. 1,2003. I want to be ready.

I am waiting for insurance to become effective(Feb. 1,2003)what all do I need to have to bring to my Doctor (for referral), so I can get the ball on the roll. Also how long should I wait to go to Dr. after insurance become effective?
