was told I need therapy...help!!!

I just got back from my psy appt and was told that I need 6 months of therapy. He said that I can still have the surgery and the therapy at the same time. Is this true? I was told that I need therapy because I do not have a support system here at home. I am a single mother, my friends live out of state, and I am not close to my family. I go to the support group meetings and am constantly on here. Is there anyway I can get around this? I can not really afford seeing a psy cause my ins only pays 50%.
