Problems quitting and re-starting Plaquenil?

I am really concerned about having to go off my meds for lupus. The anti-inflamatory doesn't bother me but the thought of going off the plaquenil scares me. I was diagnosed with lupus and RA 5 years ago and had my own rebirth after being put on plaquenil. I'm going to have WLS regardless but I would like to be prepared. I mentioned my fear to my surgeon and he said not to worry that he has even had lupus patients on IV steroids and they do just fine. Any feed back from lupies would be helpful.
