How do I know if I need my rings resized?

I've lost like 27 pounds and the rings slide around but I would feel stupid if I went to get them adjusted and they said "These don't need to be resized." How do you know? How much space should there be between your ring and your finger? One time the ring flew off when I flung my hand quickly. Or is there some kind of online sizer thing?
