Do you need to stop taking birthcontrol before the surgery?

I am taking birthcontrol and know that you need to take it after the surgery due to increased risks of pregnancy. But I read on someone's profile that the Dr. had then quit taking the pill 1 month before the surgery because it causes blood clots. Do I need to quit taking it?
