I am 6 yrs Post-op. Can I take anything for pain?

I have recently been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I also have some pretty uncomfortable arthritis. My DR told me I shouldn't be taking any pains meds. I don't want to question him he has been in the field over 30 yrs, but I know there must be something I can take for all this pain. I can't remember much about it from the meetings I attended before surgery. HELP!
