Can you be on disability after surgary till you go back to work? And how?

It my understanding that you can go on a family leave after surgary but it is without pay. I'm sure I am not the only one who can not afford this, is it possible to be on disabilty while you recover till you go back to work? Any advice on where to start the research? Also, Has anyone had problems with their employer when they've gone back? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
