Protein supplement; is it in addition to baby food, or counted as a meal?
Hi, had RNY (revision) 02/02/08 and am now in stage 3 of food. I am eating 2 ounces of baby food every 3 hours, mostly chicken or turkey because they are pure protein (8 - 9 grams per 2 ounce jar). I am sipping water/crystal light in between meals, chewing 2 Adult Centrum Chewable Vitamins a day, plus chewable Calcium/Vitamin D and liquid Vitamin B Complex. I know I need 60 to 70 grams of protein a day, which the baby food alone can not completely supply. My question is, if I drink a chocolate sugar free whey protein drink, or drink one of those 3 ounce "test tube" fruit flavored protein drinks to get protein, do those count as one of my meals in place of baby food, or are those in addition to the baby food? I have been mixing the fruit flavored protein drink (the one that comes in those test tubes) in to a bottle of water and sipping on it all day to get the water and get the protein. Those test tubes have 42 grams of protein and about 175 calories, no sugar, no fat. The whey protein mix is chocolate flavored and has about 26 grams protein per scoop. I have sometimes mixed 1/2 a scoop in about 4 ounces of milk and sipped it. I think the whey mix tastes a lot better but the fruit flavored protein delivers more protein when mixed in to my water. I am not sure if I am supposed to be counting those as a meal, or is that extra? Thanks
