Is it really necessary to have to wait 9 months for surgery?

I am at the very beginning stages of attending required pre-op group classes and have my first appointment set up with the surgeon administrator. I asked people who have had the surgery and they said it can take 9-10 months before I will have surgery. It just seems like a VERY long time. It already took me 2 yrs to decide to pursue this and I know that mental and physical preparation is important but I am so discouraged.
