what can i take for a cold?

i am 4 monts post-op rny and i am having some cold symptoms. mostly coughing and sore throat and was wondering what is safe for me to take? also, am i able to use sugar free cough drops. my stomach area is so sore from all the coughing and i just need some relief. i do plan to go to my doctor, but was hoping that my oh family could offer some suggestions. thanks in advance family.
