Has anyone used split billing to reduce out of pocket expenses?

I had my endoscopy, which showed a hiatal hernia. The doctor said that it can be surgically repaired. I want to use this opportunity to have the insurance pay for the hospital stay and some of the surgeon's fees which it would have to pay regardless. Does anyone have any experience with this approach either good or bad?
