Everyone says a cup is the limit....

Then how come my diet plan (10 weeks out, 3rd diet) consists of meals that have various amounts of food, e.g, 1/2 C vegetable, 1 serving starch, and 2 protein, which when combined are well over 1 cup of food per sitting. I have read year post ops saying that they can only eat a cup. What's the deal? Thank you.
