I did a 5k Resolution Run January 1st. May 2nd, I will do a 10K race. October is a 5K Run for the Cure; fundraiser for breast cancer where I will run for my cousin Denise who lost her battle last April. October is Legs for Literacy, where I will do my 1st half marathon. There will likely be other races in between, but those are the major ones.

Topic: RE: Goals, expectations vs. reality
I always have time goals. They are my secondary goals, but I have them.
Sometimes I make them and sometimes I don't. It can be a bummer not to make them and sometimes I do have some disappointment, but I generally have so many goals for each event and I always make some of them so normally it's not too bad.
Like at my last race, I wanted to do it in under 50 min. and I did it in 52.5. But my placement was right where I expected. I think the swim part of the course was longer than advertised or else maybe something else was going on as all the times for the top 10 in my age group were about 2 minutes longer this year compared to last year. So I wasn't disappointed at all.
But I was disappointed that I wasn't able to improve on my Wildflower Olympic time when I did Donner Lake. Yes, they are two different courses, but I was much more fit and I thought I could better than I did. Was it that I underestimated the bike course? Well, I did. But I also had a crappy swim and I made a lot of dumb logistics mistakes too. At least I had a good run.
I think, if I had run a good race, and still not made my time goals, I wouldn't be disappointed. But I didn't run a great race so I was, at least a little bit.

Topic: Bored so....
I was checking email and I got a notification that the Vineman 70.3 was full and so was the wait list. They also had record numbers of entries in the 140.6. So I got to thinking about my 70.3 triathlon this year and thought I would look at the entrants in my age group.
I have several goals for this race, and thought I'd flush those goals out some more.
1. Start the race
2. Don't drown during the swim. Depending on rain this year, it might be doable. Last year the water level was so low that people could actually stand up in certain areas of the river.
3. Finish the swim before the cutoff
4. Finish the race without having to get off the bike and walk any of the mountains.
5. Finish the bike before the cutoff, because if they let me out on the run, nobody is going to get me off the course until I finish. Even if I don't get credit, nobody is going to get me off that course until I finish.
6. Finish the race without having to walk any of the run portion.
Now on to the fantasy fun part of my race exploration. I can't help it, I love numbers and figuring things out.
There are 310 men in the 40-44 age group
Of those 310 men only 58 of them are my age
Of those 58, 34 y/o men, 51 of them are from the U.S.
Of those 51, 40 of them are from my state, CA.
Of those 40, 2 of them including me are from my home town.
So assuming I don't get DQ'd I'm guaranteed to get at least second place in the 43 y/o men from Santa Rosa, California category
And I haven't been able to confirm it yet, but I might just get 1st in the 43 y/o men from Santa Rosa, California, who have had bariatric surgery category. Woo hoo I wonder if that will give me a Clearwater qualifier slot?

The food was mediocre, actually, especially the catered meals. Breakfast the second morning was horrible. But the main thing is that they didn't really make any effort to connect us to the cause. No one with MS spoke at any of the "parties", for example. So it's not a very moving experience even though it's all organized around a cause. How come, it looked like a well attended well catered event for the riders. Scott The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record! Topic: RE: Team??
I never got a change to respond to this (crazy, busy at work) 1) In a group like this, all decisions have to be made by everyone in a way that lets people don't log in every day have time to vote too. There can be committees that run through all the choices and make proposals, but we have to go through that final step of getting the stamp of approval from the entire group. 2) Saying you can't be on the race team unless you are signed up for a Half Marathon is ELITIST BULL**** It also goes against the very goals of this group which is to encourage people to get healthy via exercise. I say that anyone who is signed up for any race of any type or length should be on the race team. For someone who has never run before, a 5k fun run can be just as challenging as a Half-marathon and that effort should be recognized and rewarded. Not to mention the size of this group isn't so big that we need to be putting people in tiers. So what if "a lot" of people want to buy a racing shirt to wear in their races. Let them -- it just publicizes the group and encourages them to get hooked on endurance racing. Which are two things we want. Frankly, if we start making a lot of rules that exclude people, I'm out of here. That is NOT what I signed up for and I have plenty of other groups that want a piece of me that I can devote my time to who would never even dream of instituting such a rule. I don't recommend Waves to Wine anyway, even if there wasn't fundraising. :D HW - 225 SW - 191 GW - 132 CW - 122 |
