Too Much Vitamin A = Liver Damage?

Because it was brought up by several people that too much Vitamin A could cause liver damage I asked my doctor to check on my A levels when she ordered some tests.  She didn't seem to be aware of any connection but sure enough, the results are back and my Retinyl Palmatate is 0.29 mg/L.  Normal is < 0.11.  Last year it was 0.06.  My Retinol (Vitamin A) was normal at 0.79 and last year it was 0.51.  The range is 0.30 to 1.20 mg/L.
I have been taking Vitalady's Vitamin A 25,000.  I'm going to stop that for a while and just get what is in my multivits.
Anyone know anything more about this?

Xpost from other board:

It might not be the vit A itself but BioTech's new formulation and your reaction to it. **A whole lot of guessing going on here.** Your level is 0.29 is on the low end if I read your range correctly. I would stop for a bit while you're testing with your doc and then once that's done you might try to find another dry vitamin A such as vitamin A acetate. Vitalady carries that in a sublingual.

There were two different measurements.  With one I was at a good level but the second one, where I had 0.29, the level was recommended to be < 0.11, so it looks to me to be at least twice as high as it should be.

That doesn't look anything like the labs I get back. I'm not sure what they're measuring. Sorry :(

there are different ways to measure vitamin A - hers were 2 different one - plain retinol and retynal palimate - they are different and have different ranges. My labs lists it as 38-98.

I have also had a problem with high vitamin A and I can't get it to go back down. I was deficient pretty early out and started on 25,000 units per day of the biotech. That wasn't enough and went onto 50.000 units - took that for 2 years and was fine until after my surgeries last winter and in March of 2011 it went way down becasue I was off of it in the hospital - went back on and within 3 months, I had skyrocketed to 119. I have been off it sincell June and it is still 110 - we cant' figure out why, I am not taking any

all postops should get virtamin A tested regularly

I've overshot mine too--going off it too and will see where I'm at in July. I think even the dry A builds up in our systems. Vitalady doesn't have to take any vit A either. So, some of us are probably good to go for a long time once we get the numbers way up.

My vitamin A was also high at my one year visit and I don't supplement. The bariatric internist had me decrease my multi-Vit to one per day. 3 months later, the value was back down to within normal range. I'm not sure why mine was elevated. I do supplement with fish oil, so that was one of the things that she was looking at as a potential cause, but she didn't ask me to stop it, because fish oil is so good for us. I also drink non-fat milk in my lattes and some shakes, as well as eat yogurt, which are supplemented with Vitamin A. Many foods are supplemented with Vitamin A, so you may not need to supplement with as much vitamin A as you have been doing.

Vitamin A is fat soluble, so it builds up in our bodies and can reach toxic levels (liver damage for one). B-vitamins are water soluble, so what we don't need, is excreted.

My Vitamin A was low during the losing stage so I take Vitalady's Vitamin A every day and so far my levels have been right on.

Thanks for the warning Tazz!  I will keep an eye on it.
