Protein intake
Just have a question...I posted this in the Miles & menus post as well.
Had my Dietitian meeting today...she told me I needed only 60-65 grams of protein by her calculations. She could not give me a good reason on why so little protein for me (i asked twice). I am keepin' up my protein limits though. I have been doing well, I did tell her I will give up my greek yogurt in the morning after I have my (1 1/2 scoop) protein shake. Is there any info. (with link if possible) saying why so little protein or an actual protein limit per body weight?
Thanks!

Maybe, she was basing her calculation on your height and weight. My program still recommends 70-80 grams protein/day. I usually get more, because of my exercise and weight training.
I wouldn't give up your Greek yogurt. It is so good for you, with probiotics, protein, calcium, etc. Plus, it tastes great. I have Greek yogurt everyday and even add some protein powder to it.
What do your labs say, namely albumin and prealbumin? I would go by them, not some arbitrary number.

60-65 is lower than most of us try to do. That may be what you need if you don't malabsorb, but we do. I found I lost best at around 100 and while getting ready for and since surgery, I have tried to do more like 140-160. I would go by your labs also. What did she want you to eat instead or did she think you were eating too much.

Hi Price,
I told her I would have my protein shake in the morning on my way to work at around 7am-8am
930 or 10am I would have my greek yogurt and a defrosted cherry or 2 mixed in
1130am I have lunch usually tuna/ chicken/ cottage cheese
230-330pm protein shake
530 pm dinner (protein and a tbs. or 2 of veggie if I am not full)
She said I should get rid of the yogurt or the protein shake one or the other as it's too much protein in the day. No specifics, just because of her calculations of their protein limits.

At a month out, we were still eating 6-8 "meals" a day and they were protein based. I think you are doing great and wouldn't change a thing.

Don't change a thing. You have an awesome plan. You have a NUT and we call them that for a reason. Don't throw here out with the bathwater, but remember she hasn't lived this life.

She's reading notes from the previous NUT who took her notes form the one prior to her. You can trace those guidlines back 20 years and they haven't learned a dang thing from their patients. You know why medical folks are astonished when they see Jody, Roz, Linda or me? Because we are healthy looking and most WLS patients aren't because they follow their docs instructions or fall completely off the wagon. Please learn from the vets here...100 grams of protein and keep with the shakes for life.

I read the ASMBS guidelines as well as the Endocrinology society's guidelines regarding WLS. ASMBS recommends 70 Grams the other society recommends 70-100 for RNY. For DS'ers they recommend more. It was not based on weight or exercise. I can double check if you need me too. But, that was specifically why I read them. Roz said I wasn't getting near enough protein. I agreed with her. But, I wanted to have some scientific backing if and when I had to argue with a Dr or RDS. In one document it stated that no recommended amount had ever been established.
