Good Morning. Emotional Investment
Governor Tarkin, a.k.a., "Mods of OH": Charming to the last. You don't know how hard I found it, signing the order to terminate your life.
Princess Leia, a.k.a, "WLS vets": I'm surprised that you had the courage to take the responsibility yourself.
Governor Tarkin: Princess Leia, before your execution, I'd like you to join me for a ceremony that will make this battle station operational. No star system will dare oppose the Emperor now.
Princess Leia: The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers.
Governor Tarkin: Not after we demonstrate the capabilities of this station. { gives the order to blow up Alderaan, a.k.a. "Obesty Help.com" }
The problem could come from boards getting so big we lose sight of the human beings behind the postings. I like the little off-shoot boards, like this one, but then I didn't come here looking for someone else to help me make my decisions. Maybe that's made a difference...I dunno. What a mess. {sigh}

But what Princess Leia said about the more you tighten your grip, the more will slip thru your fingers is so true.

I just want to say that I view the things that have happened in a somewhat positive way. I think the new board may be the best thing that ever happened for WLS. It will be run by people who actually know what it's like to live with the surgery. My understanding is that the person who started OH didn't have surgery?
I started coming to OH in 2000, mainly for information and support. I never posted on the forums because as I recall they weren't very active at that time.
I think the difference may be that OH may have been created as a commercial venture. I say may have been because I honestly don't know the history, but at least it seems that way to me.
The new board was created more to help people and for people to get support. It may or may not turn commercial, I have no idea what their plans are, but it started with good motives.
I have to be honest. I have never been to the new board. I am curious but I don't know that I would be welcome there. Some of the people have been pretty brutal to me in the past because of my surgeon and my choices. Because of my history, even though my guts are still in the DS configuration I don't feel like I belong there, even though there are others there who also have a pouch. I guess the difference is that they didn't choose to have one and I did, albeit without really knowing what I was getting into or thinking it through. Eight days really isn't long enough to prepare.

Yes, OH is a commerical venture...have to pay the staff at the home headquarters somehow.

We are working on making it a non-profit but the space and the software to run it are donated so no ads unless the Board of Directors decide to do so and there about 5 of them.

You can read it without signing in, I think...but we all seem to be having a new start over there.

It's not exactly as Gina described because there are two sides among the posters. (So it's not posters vs. OH Staff but Posters vs. Posters vs. OH Staff.
There is definitely a side that hates a few of the people who got banned (or left voluntarily) and is very happy that OH has stepped up the moderation. I guess these would be the people who supported the Empire and thought that the Rebel Alliance would destabalize the economy or something. Except those people aren't in the Star Wars movies. (George Lucas isn't know for nuance. LOL)
I think what's going on is also like "1984." Because posts and posters disappear and then it's like history has been re-written. Plus there is a lot of speaking out of both sides of the mouth and using words to mean what they don't mean. (I forget what that was called in the book but it has a name.) And there is definitely a lot of "All pigs are equal but some pigs are more equal than others." going on too when you see who does and doesn't get banned and/or moderated.
My own POV was that some of the people who were involved in this latest blowup were abbrassive and did push the boundaries of personal attacks. But they also were interesting posters who contributed to the forum. Then a few new posters who couldn't handle them got in a huff and started trying to "nanny" the forum by constantly scolding anyone whose posts they perceived as being in that group. These people were so completely annoying and many were bat**** crazy and their posts weren't remotely interesting or contributing in any way (except to provide misinformation because for some reason being a nanny seems to go hand-in-hand with not knowing what you are talking about even though there shouldn't be any corelation.

At first I spent a lot of time correcting their misiformation about WLS and nutrition. But most of their posts were just whining about how mean people were and how that's not the way to give support. So I ended up putting them all on ignore. I got the impression they had mostly given up but since I have them on ignore, I could be wrong.
In the meantime it seemed like half the posts on the main board were these two groups fighting.
And they still are.
Except now, instead of complaining about "OH Bullies" or "OH Nannies" and each side fighting in the thread, now we have people complaining because "All the good people are gone" or staring threads about how "Now OH is better" because they are gone and people fight about that.
It's crazy. And it can't go on like this forever.
I'd like to think that everyone will leave and OH will colapse, but I don't think that will happen. I think things will die down and some people will quietly come back and some will quietly leave but that the board will go on. This place has too much momentum and people have gone off in a huff before and started other boards and OH lived on.
I do think OH will die eventually but only because I think that messages boards in general are dying. People want to post where they are and where they are is on Facebook and Twitter.
