How soon after surgery do most doctors request new labs?

Some have you do them the first year at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. Some docs do less than that but I think that's a bad idea.

My Dr did them before surgery, 3 mon, 6 mon.  Then every 6 mo until 2 yrs.  I think then it is annual.

My program does them annually unless you have issues they are tracking. Most deficiencies don't show up until the 2nd year for most people so you  have to weigh the costs vs. the benefits.

For example, deficiencies with VSG are rare so getting labs pre-op, and then 3 more times in the first year is overkill for most. OTOH, I have VSG but have had issues with low protein level in my labs and so I got more labs than normal the first year ... and really every year since I'm always getting a s subset redone.

In fact I just got back from the lab  where I had followup iron, protein and A1c labs done. Took 4 vials for 5 tests when it takes 11-16 for my full labs and 25+ tests. That makes no sense to me!

The little color-coded collection tubes hold different types of preservatives.  Different tests require the presence or absence of certain chemicals.  If your doctor orders 5 tests that are mutually exclusive in what they can be collected in, you end up with 5 different tubes.  It actually makes sense that if 25+ tests are ordered that fewer tubes are needed because it's more likely the requirements will overlap on at least a few of the tests!

It may make sense but it's still amusingly ironic.
