DS Calories
Wondering how many calories DS'ers consume on a daily basis?? My hubby had part one of his ds done (the sleeve) about 18 months ago and had his consult today for the second part of the surgery..the suregon said that he would need to increase his calories to 2000 to 2500 per day along with a high fat diet..this seems really excessive to me??? Also I thought the higher fat foods with the DS made you have bad smelling gas..we are very confused at this point! Looks like he will get the second part done though within the next couple months..will be such a relief to finally get it complete!
Yep, we malabsorb a lot. About 80% of the fat, 50% of the protein and 40% of the complex carbs. So, 2000-3000 calories a day to maintain is pretty normal for a small inactive female like me. Extra calories, and protein for men to help maintain muscle mass, is usually discussed but not always. I don't go out of my way to eat extra fat but I don't avoid it either. When you malabsorb 80%, you need more than the average skinny person. Carbs (mostly sugary simple carbs) is what gives DSrs stinky gas. Clear the house of those things or he'll clear the house with his gas. If you guys have any DS questions, please ask. I'm glad to help.

Howdy,
Actually, after he has healed it won't be as challenging as you think. He will have no problem meeting those calorie requirements if he is eating a good selection of high protien foods.
I don't actually count calories because as long as you keep carbs down, protein up and listen to your body the exact calorie count doesn't seem to matter.
Wish him good luck for me.

Jenna Lynn posted a couple of threads on the DS forum that described what she ate on a typical day.

These two threads will give you an idea of what is possible to be eaten with the DS. Personally, I eat nowhere near as much as she does. These threads also give you an idea how few calories are absorbed with the DS.

Keep in mind that those links take you to the exception rather than the rule of how much most DSrs (especially new ones) eat. Take a look at the daily Bites & Vites thread. There are some new folks there that track on MyFitnessPal that are pretty informative. Men do eat a little more and adding additional shakes is a great idea.

Thanks Gina, we will check that out...we were shocked as to how much some of those people eat! Right now DH is only able to eat about 1500 calories max..I think maybe his stomach is a little smaller than most sleeves or something..but adding things like heavy cream instead of skim milk in coffee would be a really easy way to boost up the calories and fat..so definately good info out there..
I'm not a DS'er but I suspect that you have to be a little further out to manage to eat 2000 - 2500. With a VSG only, I could only consume about 3-500 the first month 6-800 up to about 4 months and 800-1000 up until the first year. I'm not sure how far out he is, but I wouldn't pu**** too much yet. Just my $.02
Sorry, I just looked closer and found he is at 18 months, my bad!

If he does get to the point where he needs to eat more, I can give him tons of suggestions.
