my hemoglobin was only 9.5 and my crit was was only 28.9. My ferratin was only 6 and my total iron was only 39! I'm 4.5 years out. What do you guys take for iron supps? I just picked up Hemogenics which hopefully not make me constipated. I'm told it won't. Pretty bad, huh?

I can't help you with this stuff but I'm sure Gina and some of the others will get back to you during their breaks or this evening.

With those numbers, I'd be standing on my doc's desk demanding an iron infusion referral. Once you get on an infusion program you can supplement with Proferrin ES to keep the numbers up. Some folks are taking up to 3 Proferrin a day. You just snap them into 2 pieces and take all the pieces at one time. Please keep us posted on what happens.

I know its bad, but is it that bad? My doc was ok with doing 2 months of iron supplements to see if I can get it up. I basically hadn't been taking iron at all prior. I'm great about all other supplements and protein. Has anyone else  been this low??

It's not bad, it's HORRIBLE. I can't believe your doc is just having you take iron supplements. I am going to guess that he's recommended one that isn't even well absorbed by us to boot.

You need a "heme" iron like Proferrin ES or a carbonyl iron like a lot of the bariatric companies sell.

Karen, I'm low as well, just not as low as your numbers indicate. When I saw my last set of labs, I got with Vitalady to figure out what to do. So now I am also taking the Proferrin ES as majormom mentioned. And yes, I snap them in half so I absorb them better.

Why go to Vitalady and not your doctor or nutritionist?? Doctors (surgeons) aren't versed in vitamins and nuts, while knowing what each one does in relation to real food, their education in Bariatric supplementation is sadly lacking.

My recommendation is to email Vitalady. Her email address is listed on her site at http://www.vitalady.com or PM her on this forum. Her user name is Vitalady.

I hope it all works out for you.

Karen, I hate to say this but you wasted your money on that type of iron. Iron glycinate is a type of ferrous iron which we don't absorb well at all. You need the carbonyl iron (which is also the least likely to make you constipated). But if it does, just add some fiber tablets to your list to take daily.
