At 16 months out I had my first SERIOUS Dumping episode...xpost

I have had issues with food comas, where you feel awful, then get sleepy and literally sleep off the effects of the food you consumed. I've dealt with foamies when you eat something that gets stuck. I've eaten too much, too fast and felt awful and thrown up, but I've never, ever had THIS happen. I had a little less than 1/4 cup of coarsely chopped walnuts and OMG!!! I started feeling uncomfortable, it went from uncomfortable to awful. I was at an ATM machine and nearly passed out. I got to the restroom just in time. I never thought I'd die, but I was clammy, shakey, cramping, and having terrible diareah. From start to fini**** was about 45 minutes, but the really rough ride was about 15 to 20 minutes. Afterwards, I was really tired, but started to feel more 'normal.'

Nuts have been a staple for me, a common snack that I've had several times a week. I normally have peanuts, almonds, pecans or once in a while walnuts, but I've never had anything like this happen. It may be a while before I try them again. I'm not sure why this was a problem. I had higher fat items before and I've had a higher sugar items before without incident. I have to say that it was pretty un-nerving. I would have understood it better if I had been messing around with candy or something else more treacherous. I guess this requires a really long-term learning curve and when you think you've got it down, you just might be surprised.

Wow, I'm surprised that walnuts had such an effect on you!!! I wonder why that happened? I'm glad you're feeling better now though! I have to agree that I probably wouldn't have any desire to eat walnuts again for quite awhile, LOL!!!!!!!!!!

Tracy,

I have to say that probably nobody was as surprised that the walnuts had that effect on me. If that had happened when I dared to have a bit of my daughter's fabulous pumpkin pancakes, I would have understood it better.

Oh well... As you say, I'll be steering clear of walnuts... at least for a while.

My one and only episode came from eating TJ's Whole Wheat pretzels.  I was craving salt and thought it was a fairly healthy carb.  Same symptoms plus vomiting!  Never eaten them again!

Hi Michelle,

When you mentioned that you had a dumping reaction to the pretzels, had you had them before without a reaction? The reason I ask this, is that I've had 1/4 cup of nuts before without any problems, then all of a sudden this. That's why I found it so disturbing.

Its crazy isen't it?  Just when you think you have the whole thing down your body decides to throw you a curve ball and things go wacky.  I tend to think it might have been a combo of things and not just the walnuts, who knows.  Glad you are feeling better.  Have a better day and God bless, Penni

Hi Penni,

I think what concerned me is that I didn't have 'anything' at all, but the walnuts. It was my early morning snack before I'd had breakfast because I was on the run and decided to scoop out a 1/4 cup measure of coarsley chopped walnuts as I ran out the door to run some errands. The only other thing I'd had was water.

Thanks for the good wishes though.

Barbra,

I've had this happen.  Generally it's dairy products (I've apparently become  occasionally lactose intolerant) However, I had a severe reaction to my usual go to "fizzy" drink (water, CL, carbonated water, SF OJ, and a little vanilla protien powder) once or twice and yet this is something I can drink other times with no consequences.  It's WEIRD.  So, let me say I know where you're coming from.  Next time you try it, go REAL slow and be somewhere safe so if you have a bad reaction you'll be somewhere you can manage it better.  Good luck!

Hi Amber,

Thanks for letting me know what's happened with you. I too have found that I'm mildly lactose intolerant on occasion. I don't know why that is, but as you say, I'll probably tread lightly with nuts in the future and make sure I'm somewhere safe when I do.

I have had the same issues with food.  Sometimes I can eat something and do fine and then other times I just want to roll over and die for about 45 minutes.  I have had the same reaction with peanuts.  I also find after I eat lunch or dinner I get that way.  Breakfast is the one good meal that I don't have trouble with.  May be becuase I don't eat much.   For lunch today I had small piece of chicken and some refried beans and a kashi granola bar and I feel like a bomb hit my tummy.  I think it is a process of trial and error most of the time.  Good luck.
