I'm trying to decide between RNY and VSG surgeries and I'm curious to know if there's a significant difference between weight loss outcomes for the two.

Please let me know your opinion as well as your own experience. Thanks so much!

I guess you could say I lost 100%?
I started at 288lbs, by surgery I was 252, currently I am 147 and a normal BMI.

First visit to surgeon - 288 ~ bmi 45.1
2 week pre-op 252 ~ bmi 39.5
Total lost - 153 Since surgery - 117!
Goal weight - 155 (mine) 180 (surgeons)
Current weight - 135 (2020 I lost 10lbs due to dedicating myself to working out more and being in better shape)

1/14/2025 still maintaining 135 :-)

Extended TT, lipo, fat injections - 11/2011

BA/BL/Arm Lift - 7/2014

Scar revision on arms - 3/2015

HALO laser on arms/neck 9/2016

Thigh Lift 10/2020

Thigh Lift revision 10/2021

VSG on 02/16/07 with

I just did the math and I've lost 105.2% of my excess weight.  My goal was 120 (right in the middle of the normal BMI range for my height) and I've lost an additional 6 pounds past goal.

VSG worked for me!  =D

At or below goal since 5/08....without mal-absorption!

My current goal is 160 but if I want to reach a normal BMI, the higher end would be 150....that would put me at 89% excess weight lost since surgery (SW: 357, HW: 392).

I never thought I would reach this point!  The rest is just Gravy!

I had rny. Started at 328lbs and currently weigh in between 153 and 157lbs normally. I have been maintaining this weight for about 2yrs now. I didnt' work the ##'s but to me, I lost 100% of my excess weight. My surgeon's goal for me was 165lbs~my personal goal was 150lbs, which I made it to, but find it very hard to stay that low. I am 5'9".  I don't know much about VSG so I don't have anything of value to add as far as that goes. Anyway, Good Luck to You!!!!!!

I've lost 100 percent of my excess weight. My high weight was 264, but my surgery weight was down to 233. I now weigh 136. My 'ideal' weight is 137, so I'm 1 lb below my ideal weight.

I don't know the statistics for VGB, but at 10 years out the statistics for RNY are.... 80 percent of patients have lost at least 60 to 80 percent of their excess weight and have maintained that loss. 10 percent will have either not lost enough to be considered statistically successful (60 percent loss of excess weight) or have experienced enough regain, to no longer be classified as successful. Another 10 percent will regain all or most of the excess weight that the lost by the time they get to the 10 year mark.

Statistics for LapBand are similar.

Good luck as you try to decide which is best for you.

Hi Barbara -
Thanks for the detailed information! I have always wondered whether the 60 to 80% figure meant that 60 - 80% of people succeeded in losing all of their excess weight or that all of the people lost 60-80% of their excess weight. Now I finally know - thanks again!

Yep ... As you see, it's kind of both! About 80 percent lost somewhere between 60 to 80 percent of there excess weight, but as you have seen by the replies you've received from others, there are those of us who exceed the averages and lose 100 percent of our excess weight.

Wishing you all the best in your journey,

Barb
