Five years ago today!!!
Five years ago this morning at age 50 I had open RNY at 293# (BMI was 51+). I had high blood pressure for which I took medication, and I gave myself insulin shots every night to control Type II diabetes. I lost 147# in one year, and my blood pressure and blood sugars were normalized within one month and still remain perfectly normal. I have had four rounds of PS to remove excess skin.
In many ways it seems like yesterday, yet in many ways it seems like another lifetime. The surgery is the single best thing I’ve ever done for myself. At age 55, I am experiencing a level of fitness I’ve never known before at any age. If it were possible to place the 18-year-old Connie on the bike next to me in spinning class, I would kick her @ss!!
For many years I have suffered from an eating disorder, and I’m still a work in progress. Sometimes when I’m under stress I still want to turn to food for comfort. Old habits die hard. But my tool still works and helps me stay on track.
If any newbies want pearls of wisdom from me, I would suggest that you maximize the “honeymoon period”---learn better eating habits and move your body. Then when your pouch has increased in size and you can consume more food, you will be less likely to regain. I came to like the taste of healthier food. That’s not to say I don’t occasionally want junk, but I’m able to indulge less often and not feel deprived.
I don't come around often, but wanted to drop in on this occasion, it means a lot to me that I've reached this milestone.
Here are some before/after:

Congratulations on such a great and long term success! WOW!!!
I am a relative newbie. I am having a revision from LapBand to RNY on 9/22 and you are a great inspiration and are helping to settle my nerves and fear of another failure. Can I ask what types of PS you had (what areas)? Thanks for your inspiration!

Thanks so much for the good thoughts! Exercise is a big key to my long-term success!! I do both cardio and strength/weight training.
As for PS, I've had a lower body lift, then arms with breast lift/augmentation, then face/eyes/neck, and lastly---inner thighs. So I don't have excess skin, but I do have lots of scars!
Hugs,

Thanks for sharing.
Hearing from those who are more than just a year or two out helps.
I'm looking forward to begining the journey soon. I have a 6 month supervised diet I must complete for insurance purposes. I look at it as an opportunity to work on my eating issues prior to surgery. Hoping it will greatly help with the transition. The only thing is that if I show such good progress the insurance company will recommend continuing the diet instead of WLS.
I view the WLS as a tool to really help in the long run.
Anyway, you look wonderful and I can hear in through your words you feel wonderful !!!!!
Keep on, Keepin'On........
