Have an odd request...
I have been down and out for a month with major obstruction, bowel strangulation.. ... 3 surgeries and massive weightloss down to 110. They put in a feeding tube into my old stomach to feed me some medical nutriton and amp up my weight.
Very scarey, overwhelming... anxiety and depression.
So my request is......... can you give me low sugar suggestions for high caloric foods.
I know it goes out of bounds of the normal but I know we all know the things that bump us up in a bad way but as far as this goes I need all the little tricks I can get.
Thanks everyone... any support and prayers for my strength and weight gain so I can get this feeding tube out would really be appreciated.

Start Weight - 263
Current Weight 135 and making it work for ME !
Wow...The only high calorie foods I know of are pure dense protein like steak and that would be hard.
I do have a high protein oatmeal concoction that I do every morning. 1/3 cup instant oatmeal, 1/2 cup Textured Vegetable Protein, 1 cup soy milk and microwaved for 3 minutes (stirring between each minute and watching really close the last minute for boil over) and then butter buds and splenda..That is 360 calories and about 36 grams of protein in a bowl. Only 6 grams of fat too. I happen to love it.
A cup of refried beans is 365 calories. Add some cheddar cheese to that and some mild salsa...Got to be 400+ calories.
I'm thinking you aren't on solids so that's the way I'm headed. How about real mashed potatoes with butter and milk? And a nice heavy gravy..Just 1 cup of potatoes is 237 calories. a tablespoon of butter 100 calories. A cup of meat gravy is 100 calories (these numbers come from fitday).

You could try the sugar-free ice cream made into shakes with whole milk or half-and-half. What about mashed potatoes made from heavy cream and topped with real butter? Both of these foods should be fairly easy to tolerate after your sugery, as they are not solid. Creamy soups would be high in calories. These don't have much protein too speak of; however, they are calorie heavy, which is what you are seeking. God bless you and I wish you a speedy recovery.

03/17/03 128 LB size 2 / 4 ((2 years post op) Complete obstruction (multiple areas of strangulation from adhesions,& multiple internal hernias)
I was so sore, so weak. It took my intestines weeks to "wake up" without hurting/ cramping to have normal bowel life...
In the meantime - I felt / looked emaciated : knew I HAD to put weight back on to give me strength.
Munched on wheat thins - chewed till liquid and...
Drank with my meals - creating "soup" to allow me to ingest more calories...
Drank bottle after bottle of clear (numerous flavors) ISOPURE from GNC. Bought a case - the clear liquid was easy to tolerate after surgery. It had protein, gave me strength and was soothing to my guts.
Ate "plain" yogurt - sweetened with any "all fruit" , polaner, etc.
Munched little bits all day of cashews - chewed till "cashew butter..."
All this to say, Linda, is it was trial & error AND "effort" to figure out what would make my body "hummmm"... the flavors I liked, what pouch did / didn't like, etc.
With diligence - it took about 9 months - but I gained back to a normal (ideal) weight range (for me) and have parked here for almost 4 years!!! It took a concerted, consistent effort to start the regain - but through it I learned that I HAD CONTROL of my weight-destiny...
Just the opposite issue: The past 7 or 8 months I've found myself skipping my little meals - caught up in caregiving elder parents. As a result, I've begun a gradual re-gain: when I do eat it's too late, & other bad habits.. SO to counterbalance that, I've begun making protein fruit smoothies! My 19.00 Hamilton Beach "wave station" , some frozen fruit, plain yogurt, vanilla whey protein powder, a banana, etc. and I've been drinking 2 a day. I've lost the little gain & actually feel fantastic w/ the "average daily portion of fruits"... (duh.. )
So experiment! You may like smoothies! or shakes loaded with extra goodies. (hey if Jamba juice can do it so can we!)
I'll be thinking, prayin & "pullin" for you! Let us know how it all unfolds!

When I needed to gain weight I used the body bulking protein drinks, starbucks frappucinos and their cookies. Unfortunately, all those have sugar (the protein drinks have dextrose, etc).
For your situation, I'm thinking you need to use fat (since sugar is not an option). One obvious item is NUT BUTTERS like peanut butter, almond butter, etc. Oh, and you have the nuts themselves.
Another is whipped cream. So if you're thinking of having pancakes go for a berry topping with (lots of) whipped cream. Sour cream is another good one: with butter on baked potato or even tacos, etc.
Salad dressing is another item. If you're having a salad load on the oil.
The great irony is that after thinking in terms of low calories and "diet foods" it is hard to think in the other direction.

Good Lord ! That's a lot to go through ! My suggestion is stew. Some good home-made, cream, gravy or butter based thick and hearty stews. Take one of those hand held mixers to them if you need to smooth out the vegetable and protein lumps. I always gain weight on these babies.
