ok- i know that i should KNOW this- i had RNY- (proximal i am pretty sure- don't remember how many cc's...)
when i drink a 26 gr protein shake (mixed only with water so no additional protein source) how many grams of that protein should i be absorbing?????

thank you.

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

Everyone always quotes the "you can only absorb 30 g at a time" statement. No studies have ever been done to prove or disprove this myth. Your body will absorb 'what it needs' and you will release the rest through urine. You should be ok, but the danger comes when someone tries to take in 60 g in one sitting, believing that they have all their daily protein intake in for the day. I would say as long as you are spacing out your protein intake throughout the day, and getting in a minimum of 60 g per day, you will be fine.

My support group leader, who had RNY some 9 years ago, and the manager of my surgeon's office both agree that 25-30 grams per serving of protein should be observed for the first several months, or possibly a year.  I'm 27 months out and I still adhere to this rule almost 100% of the time. DAVE

This topic has been brought up on the Nutrition Board many times.
There is no evidence that we 'only' absorb 30g at one time. Just keep in mind that we don't absorb 'everything' anyway. Just keep your protein up, 60-80g per day and you should do just great.

My nut said 30-40...I can't find a good solid reference anywhere either.  But I eat 100g a day at 1500 ish cals.  I can eat 4-6 ounces protein per meal...My labs are good for protein....and I maintain my weight.  I don't think I need more than the 30-40 I get per meal based solely on my own stats.

Here's one of my favore nutrition sites. They give tons of references but are not a WLS site...Still the basic knowledge and info are priceless to me.  There are other subjects here too...Not only the protein story....
