MSNBC Article
Hello ~
I haven't been on this board much recently as I'm pregnant and I've been on the pregnancy board.
But I read this article today and wondered if anyone else had seen it and what you thought of it..

Hi,
I read the article, and It is a little scary when you read about things that could happen to you after having this surgery. I believe everything happens for a reason, and whatever is meant to be is meant to be. I know for right now I am healthy, and that is because of my RNY surgery. So to all the pre-op's and post-op's remember to stay on track, don't look at this surgery as being a quick fix. This is something you need to take serious, and has to be done for the rest of your life.

I just can not imagine that if a surgery or proceedure caused problems in 40% of the cases (4 out of 10), that they would continue to do the proceedure. I think the whole article is flawed at best. There is NO WAY 40% of the people on this board have had those sorts of problems.
I was thinking the other day that you almost always hear about this one or that one who had problems but you never hardly ever hear about the success stories before you have the surgery. Most people are more than glad to tell you they knew someone, who knew someone, who died...blah blah...
The article could be true but that's not my experience. AT ALL.

Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Hmmm, I don't know that I agree with everything in this article. Yes, some do experience complications, but not 4 out of 10 to my knowledge. Also, they stated that only 10% will reach a normal BMI~I would also disagree with that. The tone of the article was one against wls,so its not a surprise that they would slant it in this way. Wls is something to take seriously and not something that anyone should enter into lightly~research must be done, you have to commit to a new way of life for a lifetime, etc~but to me its been a God Send, a new lease on a healthy life!!! Could something happen to me down the road 1, 5, 20yrs out? Sure, but for me, the benefits outweighed the risks.

man oh man that article was depressing, BUT i just dont buy into the theory that all of us have these problems
i think that like anything else in life we sometimes hear the worst case scenarios. the success stories are not such good copy.
im gonna think positive and hope for a long and healthy post surgery life.
thats my plan and im sticking with it
hugs to all, jacki

Everyone pretty much summed up what I was thinking when I read the article.
I will admit I'm one of those who has experienced weight gain and difficulties losing the excess. However, I had an upper GI and I now know there is a medical reason why. I plan to have a revision about this time next year.
Given my experience the first time around, that's saying a lot. I truly believe this surgery saves more lives than not.
Maybe next month someone will post a more favorable WLS story on a major news site.

Hi Diane, I haven't been heremuch either...lots going on with my husbands health. I read the article and I have to say I don't agree on most of it. I know several people who have had the surgery with no problem nor myself yet I have read on here some who did but their numbers in the article don't add up.
BTW, I wanted to congratulate you on your pregnancy. You are gonna have your hands full with the little ones....be sure to take your vitamins.
Hugs,
~Ginny
