Vitamins
Each program's protocol is different on a lot of the vitamins.
My clinic calls for: a high quality multi vitamin; 1200 mg Calcium Citrate w/vitamin D; and a prescription iron & B12 with intrinsic factor to aid in absorption. He also puts us on prescription Pepcid for 2 years. In addition to the prescribed regimen, I take 5mg of Biotin and an Omega 3 capsule every day.
Many of us start out taking liquid or chewable versions of our vitamins and change to regular form later.
Our surgeon checks labs on a regular basis to make sure we are absorbing our vitamins properly. If the labs show a deficiency we may be instructed to increase a certain vitamin or add something else.
I've had my 1 years labs drawn and they showed everything was normal except vitamin D but I had a problem with this before surgery. I am taking prescription, high dose vit D for 8 weeks and then will be on maintenance. Just an FYI - the last time I bought my Calcium Citrate I got a different brand and didn't notice it did not have Vit D in it. So, for the past 3 months the only D I was getting was in my multi and from food and sun exposure. My PCP will check it again in April to make sure it is where it should be.
