Doreen,
Yes, it is normal to be nervous and excited too. I was scared the day before my surgery and I wanted to run away the day of the surgery. But the week during surgery I was excited and nervous. This is a time where you go through different emotions and feelings. So all that you are feeling is normal. Try to relax and remain calm. No, the drains do not hurt you. They are a little bit of a bother but they are harmless all together. Nothing to really worry about with the drains. Congratulattons with the getting approved for the surgery. Way to go! you are soon becoming another member of the losing bench. So welcome aboard good friend.
Your friend,
Tina Cannon
Sweetie, it is normal to be nervous...this is major surgery! I had mine Feb 13, 2006 and so far have lost almost 140 pounds. I started at 307 (and probably was much higher than that)...and was 169 today.
As for the pureed phase, you have to remember that you are thinking about this in terms of how you feel now when you eat. I found that it wasn't that hard for me because I really wasn't all that interested in food. One of the things that was easiest for me to eat later in the pureed phase and just as I was entering into more solid food was Wendy's chili. It stayed down SO well...and made it easy when I went back to work because the Wendy's was right next to the campus...and 99 cents for lunch is great! I still can't quite finish a small chili. I do get extra cheese (and now get onion in it too).
You will find things your stomach won't like. LISTEN TO YOUR STOMACH and don't try to keep eating something it doesn't want. You WILL know, I promise!
You are going to do fine and you will get lots of support.
I was excited! I was so-o-o-o ready for this surgery.
I didn't have any drains so I can't comment on those.
Pureed is not hard. Like another poster said though, listen to your pouch. If it is telling you it doesn't like something, STOP! Some things may sit well one day and not the next. Other foods won't go well the first time but after a few days everything will be fine with that food. Just take things slow and you'll do fine.

Dorreen,
I just had my surgery 2 weeks ago and I'm in the pureed phase now. I've been able to eat cream of wheat (with protien whey, grits too), eggs, cottage cheese, pudding, tuna fish, pureed chicken, and lean pork tenderloin, green beans, and mushrooms. I've been also able to eat mashed potatos and pureed beans to. I'm needing ideas myself for the pureed phase. One thing that I do, is take the meat (chicken, or lean pork) or green beans, and mix some broth with it. It helps with the flavor. The look of the pureed food is not that great, but you'll get past that quick. Where is your surgery? I'm in Nasvhille and am not familiar with your part of TN. I am praying for you and your quick recovery. I've recorded my recovery process in my blog so feel free to look at it. I hope this helps.

Dear Doreen, I wasn't a bit nervous, I have already been thru the ups and downs just trying to find a surgeon to do my surgery. I had two drains, one was removed 3 days after surgery. The second one when I saw the surgeon 5 days after being discharged. I didn't have any problems with them. I can't comment on the pureed phase, it always looked like something from my grandson's diaper. So I just ate soft foods, like refried beans, high in protein, and a must in everyone's cabinet. I would just add cheese to it, microwave it and eat it that way. Now I do it with the round tortilla chips.
Think of this as a baby. Tomorrow is the first day of your life. You will start on liquids just as a baby would be, then pureed, then soft, then gradually add solids. I wish you the best.
May God travel with you on this new journey. You're in my prayers, Kathy
Hi Doreen,
I had my surgery 8/28/06 and I want to tell you that I had the same feelings I was excited and nerveous all at the same time. I did great and still am. I have lost 89 lbs thus far. I had RNY. I did have drains they weren't to bad. The one that really bothered me was on my right side, the nurse told me he was probably touching a little nerve in there. Once they took it out I was fine. I will be sure to say a prayer for you tomorrow. I trust and pray all goes well for you and you have a speady and easy recovery. Oh yes, the blended stage is not that bad. I lived off of tuna and chicken, I would mix a TBS of Fat Free Mayo and blend it up made it taste ok, kinda like a chicken or tuna salad without the extra things. I also would mix tuna and mustard, in the blender it made for a little difference to the taste buds and was actually pretty good. My hubby had his surgery Dec. 19, I would put spicy mustard in his chicken and blend it. He really liked that. My hubby as lost 39 lbs. in one month.
As I said I know you will do great.
When you have time and are feeling up to it check our the CMC-WLS web site
there are lots of tips from people who have had surgery and are always willing to help you in any way they can.
Blessings to you.
