I'm scared!

I had my follow up appt with Dr. H today. I have to get my first set of labs done... and I'm scared!! What if they are not good? What if it shows up that I haven't done my calcium and vitamins like I should? Yikes! I gotta do better. I have something that will tell on me. Also, I told Dr. H today that I have been eating cantaloupe with my cottage cheese. He said once in awhile isn't that bad, but not on a continual basis. I have been eating it about 3 times a week. I am able to eat it without getting sick... but he said its all about calories. I looked and its about 65 calories for the portion I have been eating. Do you think that is bad? But I do know that I need MORE protein, less cantaloupe I guess.... Other than that, things are great. I feel much better now that the stricture is fixed. More energy. Better coloring. etc.

All you can do is what you can do , I know it is hard to remember to take the calcium and vits. I put mine in a pill minder so I can know at a glance if I have been slacking off . As far as the cantalope . CMCWLS has a very strict program . I know they say no fruit till close to goal ,, I think fruit and salad is what I miss the most . Hang in there you are doing great . Laura

Don't be scared. If anything is low, they'll just tell you to take whatever you're deficient in. My 6 month appointment showed low iron... they called me and told me to add a chewable iron supplement. You'll be fine Sure, you need to focus on protein first ... but as long as you stay within your calorie range Dr. Houston has set for you, you'll be fine. Add some exercise too and you'll be super fine April

Hi Melinda, don't be scared. April says it all. I also put my vitamins and medications in a pill box for each day and night, but I am bad about remembering to take the morning pills including my chemo pill. That's bad for me. But I know once my stress level and I get moved, things will settle down and I'll get back on my daily routine. I didn't start on garden salads until after 6 months, but I was eating fresh fruit at 3 months out. Dr. Colquitt had a field day when I was in the hospital because of my potassium as they had put grapes on my tray with my cottage cheese. They have to be pealed. Well, they weren't and I had no problems with them, I eat them constantly now. But he still would not allow them to give me grapes, and said I could have canned fruit instead no sugar added. I really don't like canned fruit. I still have to peal my apples and cut them into bite sizes. Dentures can't bite into a fresh apple nor am I able to eat the pealing or eat thin lettuce. Doesn't bother me, I just work around them. But as for cantalope, I started that at 4 months. I still can't eat oranges but I did take a bite of one at Christmas and savered the taste. Do what Dr. H says, he knows best. But don't sweat the small stuff like blood work. It isn't a big thing to worry about. If you are where you should be great, if you are low in sometime, he'll just tell you to add more. At three months I was put on a pre-natal vitamina with iron. Makes my hair and nails grow faster. I also started right after surgery rather 2 weeks after surgery Dr. Colquitt put me on tums twice a day with calcium as I can't take just a regular calcium vitamin. I build calcified kidney stones. I drink a half a glass of milk with my pills, and take the tums. I have brittle bones that a slight fall or a hard squeeze of a hug could break a bone, but it's better then the dreaded kidney stones I get so often. I know in my heart you will be fine. Let your surgeon and God worry about it all, and you do just the best you can do. That is what is expected of you. My nutrionist and I talked on the phone because I can't see well at night to drive to the required nutrion class after surgery. She told me because of my chemo to eat whatever I could protein first just to get food into me. I don't worry about the carb, and white sugar doesn't bother me at all. I've never gotten sick from having white sugar or too many carb in my diet. Dr. Colquitt hasn't worried about them either for the simple reason, I am still losing weight too fast, I've lost 141 lbs since surgery and only 6 more to my goal. He prefers I try and get more carbs in me since they don't make me sick to try and slow my weight down. It doesn't matter what I do, the cancer in my blood and bone marrow keeps me losing and in inches too. But I don't recommend you doing the same thing. As much as I am thrilled at losing the weight, had I known a year ago what would happen with my having leukemia, I would never have gone thru with the surgery. Don't get me wrong, I love my little frame back, but I have paid a major price health wise between the diet and the chemo. See you soon, love ya, Kathy
