Need a referral to Vanderbilt
Thank you Juanita: I have already emailed the Center at Vanderbilt to get the ball rolling. I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one. I thought it was only Houston, but when I called Dyer, who was on call last night, he was just as bad to my husband. They're usually a little more well-behaved with a man on the other line. Not this time. Did they not learn in medical school that this was NOT a 9-5 job?
And I'm no rookie when it comes to dealing with docs. I worked in hospitals for years in admissions during college and in Public Relations after college. My mother was a nurse, so I know of what I speak.
I do want to make sure and say that the women who work for these guys are fabulous! They are very caring and kind.
Thanks and best wishes!
Hey Debbie,
I read your profile but didn't see anything specific about what happened. You said he was cold and uncaring but that doesn't really tell us what happened.
I don't think a surgeon at Vanderbilt is going to take you on this soon after surgery. I would suggest you try to give Dr. Houston another chance. Not knowing specifically what happened, I would have to think the problem might have been a combination of a doctor dealing with the stresses of his job coupled with the normal stress of the upcoming holidays and you, the patient, dealing with the physical and emotional aspects of being newly post-op.
I have never heard anything negative about Dr. Houston. I have met him and found him to be a very pleasant man. I have to believe he was having a bad day when whatever happened between you occurred.
Anyway, hope you are feeling better.
Susan
Hi April,
I'm doing better. Christmas is always hard for me emotionally. No matter how much I prepare myself beforehand, it always gets to me.
The last coherent day my dad had was Christmas day 2001. He died December 27, 2001.
Just before Christmas 2002 my daughter and SIL announced they were expecting. Their son was born 14 1/2 weeks early weighing 1lb 12oz and lived on total life support for 19 hours.
With the focus on Christ as a baby I can't help but think of our own little one whose time with us was much too short.
We did have a nice Christmas though. Took some family photos that I'll post soon.

Hi Juanita,
Just wanted to know if you had a great birthday?? did you get your hair done??
Also, I wanted to let you know that a support group meets in Springfield (they're mostly vanderbilt patients) that you might be interested in attending. If you want more information, just let me know. Christian and Jen (I think that is her name) from Vanderbilt have attended this group several times too. They're both great, caring professionals
What happened with your experience at Centennial..if you don't mind my asking?
April

April I had a good birthday and thanks for asking. I have not had my hair done yet although my dad and step mom have set it up for me to get a "makeover" at thier expense
I will definetly make use of it as soon as I get some time off.
Centenial experience: I went to a Seminar and the nurse that was there at the time made a comment. I was sitting waiting fro Seminar to start and she approaches me and tells me "You might want to move to another chair since that one seems to be too small and restricting your hips" Well o.k. that is my choice then I later in the seminar that this same nurse had Gastric bypasss herself. Wow I couldn't belive someone who had been obese before would be so crude. Anyways that was first insult then at this time I was working two jobs and going to school single mother with two kids and I try to set up first appointment and was told Ohh no you have to make all these appointments on your own such as the EGD the sleep study, phsyc eval and everything that is required I would have to call and set up appoint and do all this before I could even see a doctor. Who has time for all that? Well then I kind of gave up until I got a new job where I am now and A lady I worked with had the bypoass I told her my experience with Centenial she referred me to Vanderbilt and the rest is History. I had no problems at all through Vanderbilt. They set up all my appoint and everything went very smoothly..
