Having children post gastric bypass?

Can someone that has had gastric bypass have children? Or would they be throwing their chance to have children away? I'm worried of 1) not having healthy children, and 2) gaining back the weight. Just wondering. Thanks.

Hi, I don't know much about it but I know I have read several places you can have children but need to wait a certain length of time. I don't remember if it was 6 months or a yr. Ellen

My doc says wait at the very least 12 months. But mistakes have happened. I beleive there is a pregnancy forum.

You need to visit the Postop Pregnancy Forum. You'll see that there are plenty of women who have gone on to have very healthy pregnancies & babies and have not gained the weight back. Susan

Hi Alyssa, although I can't have children anymore (thankful on that one) my surgeon says to at least weight until 18 months. That's when your weight will settle down, then you can try to have a baby. As Susan said check with the pregnancy forum regarding the weight problem. Also check with your surgeon as to when he thinks you can get pregnant. He's your best source of information. Best to you, Kathy
