Please Pray for my mom, dear friends!
Hello dear friends, I haven't been on the board a lot this past couple of weeks. It's because it's been really crazy around here. My mom is not well. She has diabetic coma like states she goes in and out of and she is not lucid when they happen. This morning we nearly lost her and only a miracle from God kept her with us. Her sugar bottomed at 24. Yes, you read that right, 24. We were able to get it up quickly and she came out of it well but we are really worried she is not going to make it even to Christmas. We are thinking positively as possible but it is hard. I am very close to my mom...she is just everything to me and I even live above her in a little apartme. She is the best. Please pray for my mom and please pass this along to any prayer lists you may know of. I believe in the power of prayer by name so her name is Frances Bilbrey. Thanks everyone!
Hi Kym, dad had the same problems, only to find out he was getting too much insulin, his Dr. had him on shots while he was on chemo for lung cancer, but after the chemo was over, is when he would bottom out, pass out while driving, hitting two parked cars and had no idea where he was. He did it again down here in a motel near my place. Found out he was getting too much, and he's back on pills going great. If you are getting too much or not enough, both can cause you to bottom out and go into a coma. Talk to her Dr. and let him/her beaware of this problem. She's in my prayers, but her diabeties isn't under control and it needs to be. Is she on shots or pills, does she check at least 2 times a day her blood sugar? Start keeping a list what her blood sugar was, the time it was taken, and befoe eating. Same in the evenngs. Make sure she is eating foods low in sugar, and nothing with processed sugar. No Carbs like breads, potatoes, pastas of any kind. They make startch and starch turns to sugar. How's her weight? Is she over weight, then she needs to be put on a special diet program, and excersice to control her sugar. But I would talk to her dr. about the bottoming out problems. That's is no way normal.
Think positive and you know she's in our prayers. Love ya, Kathy
Hey Kathy, thanks for all the advice, but honestly, we have done all that. We all work very hard at keeping her regulated but lately it is just almost imposible. Her doctors have basically told us that her pancreas is just not working at all...she has essentially slipped into type 1 diabetes. It is usually easier to control but lately, well, it is just so hard. I really appreciate all your thoughts and suggestions though, it just send the message that you really care and are thinking about me and that means the world to me. I will go to my dad though and make sure he is still doing the above things...who knows, he may be slipping as he gets wore out. Thanks Kathy, I love you and keep you in my prayers!--Kym
You and your mom are definitely on my prayer list! I understand how close you are to your mom and she is lucky to have you living so close. You may need to remind her to monitor more closely until her doctor can figure out what is causing the low blood sugars. It may be caused partly by her concern over your upcoming surgery.
Make sure you have her check her blood just before she goes to bed. If it's below 100, I'd suggest some kind of snack containing 15 grams of carb and some protein. Even if it's 1/2 a sandwich, it will keep her from bottoming out overnight.
Give her our love and tell her she has to take extra special care of herself for your sake. Sometimes our moms worry too much about their children and forget to take care of themselves.
Love ya Girl!
Susan
Hey Susan, thanks for your concern and prayers! What is so strange is that when she went to bed that night before, her sugar was 130, when my dad checked it at 2am it was really high so he gave her insulin and checked it again in an hour and it was still high so she told him to give her some more...but this time she didn't eat and when he checked it again it was 24. We think that's where it went wrong. Now that I have had a little time to think it through I realize that is probably what happened. She is actually so excited about the surgery that I think she starts planning and forgets to check or ask my dad to check. I am so glad I have people I can talk to and get feedback from. Knowing I have you guys means so much!
Love, Kym
