Topic: HELP PLEASE
Do you have sleep apnea ??
I need some answers , Ok so Ohip requested that I needed a sleep study before my approval , but they ended up approving me after my first denial with oput the sleep study results ..
So I had already went and had my consult with the Dr and am now aiming to have surgery in the very near future .. when I had my consult the Dr DID NOT request a sleep study .. Well I got the results back today and it came back positive that I do infact have Sleep Apnea .. So my question is do I need to tell the Dr that I went for a sleep study and I do have Sleep Apnea and do I just let it be .. I really do not want my surgery date pushed back and futher away , Nor do I want to go spent $1100.00 on a machine I am only going to need for a very short amount of time .. WHAT DO I DO
DO you have sleep apnea what happens during surgery ??
please I need alll the info I can get on this
ASAP
Thanx

I'm wondering the same thing...does insurance deliniate between the two? I'm hoping sleep apnea that requires cpap is good enough to qualify as a major co-morbidity...if I was talking to anyone other than a fellow wls candidate ...they'd think I was crazy!

Annette -
I've been using mine for about three weeks now...I find I wear it for about 5 hours a night, early in the morning apon waking I end up taking it off and falling back to sleep without it. When I went for my sleep study with CPAP hey let me try all three different types of masks...I couldn't use the nasal pillows d/t the direct flow of air, I felt like I needed to take it off right away, it just wasn't comfortable. I ended up going with the full face mask, it was the most comforable for me. My pressure is 9. How long does yours ramp? Mine is set at 15 minutes...maybe yu need a more gradual incline of pressure? You can shop around online for other masks if you need too. Hope this helps some.

Dear Annete,
It's NEVER comfortable. I just find that it gets more bearable. I've been using one now for ? 2-3 mos.
I'm puzzled by the part that you feel like you are not getting enough air. I would think the response would be just the opposite, especially as the machine ramps up. Do you mean that you feel the pillows are leaking & you're not receiving the air? Maybe you could just do without the ramp feature & receive full pressure immediately? Is your nose blocked - allergies or something?
I can't wait until the day I get rid of the stupid machine. My husband also has one & refuses to use it.
I've also changed masks & alternate frequently with the size of nasal pillows (did they give you other sizes?). Perhaps changing the pillows to better fit your nasal openings might help.
Good luck!

Topic: Came home on 24 hr oxygen therapy
Hello! My RNY was 8.14.07, and I was frustrated to come home with O 2. I'll be re-tested by the RT next week, and am wondering if those who have had this experience have words of wisdom. Thank you!

Not really sure that there is any way to help you get used to it other then just wearing it....now it could be the type of mask you have...when i had issues with the first mask they gave me one that fits securely under my chin and it works much better

I have sleep apnea, but it is mild. I also have a CPAP machine. I am required to wear it every night. Has anyone gotten approved through BCBS of Al, with mild sleep apnea?
Topic: RE: I HAVE SLEEP APNEA AND I'M CONSIDERING RNY
I have sleep apnea and have the nose mask, not the full mask. I use the ramp up system so it is easier to fall asleep.
One thing I found interesting is that I asked my doctor if the weight loss would take care of the sleep apnea and she said not necessarily. I was told that most people who have sleep apnea inherit this trait from their parents. They have it from birth, but it is not until middle age (sorry, it hurt my feelings too) that symptoms start to show up, the snoring, fatigue, etc. I had a bad EKG that tipped off the doctors to the sleep study necessity. I was only getting 60 percent oxygen with the normal being 97 percent. At that low rate, your brain and your heart are affected and lack of concentration and fatigue set in.
So, while I am looking forward to life changes with weight loss after my surgery, I'm not necessarily going to be able to give up the CPAP. We may be friends for life.
