Lisa maybe you should try a different type of mask. I used the BREEZE. It had nasal pillows and I did have to wear a Tiara chin strap that I ordered from the internet. But the mask that fit over my nose and mouth was just horrible, I coud never get it to stop leaking had to tighten the straps so tight that my face was bleeding in spots. But the nasal pillow masks are the way to go IMHO.

Tammie I did have cpap before my wls and used it about 6 months after wls. My setting was at 18 and I think I remember they told me it can go as high as 30. I had a follow up test and the sleep dr said i dont need it anymore.

I have had a CPAP for about 10 years now and the biggest problem was finding the right mask. There are so many different types and brands available to us now. I have had 6 different ones over a 10 year period and my favorite is the Activa it moves with you and is quite comfortable. The original respironics mask that came with it was awful and the headgear was not at all comfortable. A good medical supply house can show you several types and once you find the right one you will enjoy a good nights sleep.

I also just clean mine out with warm water and a mild antibacterial soap. It is good and dry by the time I need it in the evening.

Topic: using CPAC as a crutch
I am going in for an overnight sleep test at the hospital this Saturday night for a follow up to check my sleep apnea. I saw the doctor yesterday and he said I only had 3.4 obstructions without CPAC last week when I had my oximetry test. This was a difference from 144 obstructions from a year ago. He asked me to not sleep with the CPAC from now until Saturday as he wants at least 4 days to go by where I sleep naturally and I prepare my body for the overnight test. He also said that my muscle tone has probably changed after wearing CPAC for over a year. Needless to say, I was too scared to sleep last night and I tossed and turned all night worrying that I would stop breathing, Finally after several hours I put my mask back on and slept a little. It is now 4 am and I am wide awake, geesh!! I think I am now using the CPAC as a crutch. So tonight I will pack it up and put it away in the carry on case so I have no choice but to comply with the instructions. The good news is that if all goes well this Saturday night they will tell me to stop using it for good, yahoo! or they will reduce the pressure much lower. It went from a 15 to an 11 but it is still too high. Sim 57.5 inches gone since June 26/07 RNY June 26, Seattle, WA- Dr. Hunter-Virginia Mason HW 323 lbs; SW 313 lbs; CW 202 lbs, GW 150 lbs

I have two different masks. I have the one that goes over my nose and the other that is small and goes directly into my nose. I don't mind the in the nose one because I don't feel claustraphobic. It did take me a long time to get used to the machine. I could only wear it for 1-2 hours the first week. After that I found myself sleeping longer with it on, but would take it off when I got up to use the bathroom (and not put it back on when I went back to bed). I had burning nose problems. I have the humidifier on my machine and turned it up. I also line the inside of my nose with a little bit of petroleum jelly. That seems to help me. I hope you're able to find a way to make peace with your machine. FYI - I named my machine Darth Wheezer.

I don't dry out my mask with anything. I clean and rinse it in the morning - then leave it on a towel to air dry.

Have you tried putting some vaseline inside of your nose? (Not too deep.) I've done that and it seems to help my nose from hurting.
