Kidney stones and Toradol
I ended up in the ER last night because of another kidney stone. Despite telling TWO nurses that I could not take Toradol (I know from previous adventures that it is their "go to" injection) because of my RNY and because I take Coumadin (anti-inflammatories increase the anticoagulation and can cause bleeding), guess what I was given? Yep. I only found out because it wasn't helping much with the pain and when I told them that, they said that the Toradol takes longer to kick in than morphine and I would have to wait a few more minutes and then they could give me morphine if I still needed it.
Grrr. Even my mom heard me tell the one nurse and heard her say that she would tell the doctor. The pain had increased by the time the doctor actually came in to talk to me and I wasn't thinking clearly and I didn't think to tell him.
I don't really think that there's much chance of getting an ulcer just from the one injection, but you never know. I'm mostly just pissed off because I told them twice that I could not take it and they gave it to me anyway!
Considering getting a new medical alert bracelet and putting a Toradol allergy on it...

I hope you are feeling better. They should have not given you Toradol. I took it before surgery and it did not agree with me at all. I hate when you go to the ER and they think you are there just for pain meds.
I can think of a lot of other things to do then sit in then emergency room for 4 hours waiting to be seen.I hate when people don't listen to the patient. We know our bodies. They did finally give me morphine I was in so much pain it was unbearable.
When I went to the ER three weeks ago I had to tell them at least five times that I can't take things like Motrin. They also performed a pregnancy test on me. I told them that I don't have a uterus or ovaries. I told them I was not going to pay for that.
Well anyway I hope you are feeling better.I would write a letter to the hospital.Telling them that the ER needs to get some training on people who have had WLS.

I was "spayed" while ago, and I old them that if I turned up pregnant, since I am both a lesbian and run around with a lot of nuns....that I would be sending the bill for the pg test to God, from whom I would be seeking child support.....haven't been tested since, for some strange reason................and seriously, yes, ER staff need WLS training!
I called the Patient Relations office and explained what happened and they are supposed to have someone call me back tomorrow. I did that the one time a different ER took people with the flu and an older woman *****ported a cough and a 2 degree fever before me when I had abdominal pain and spontaneous bruising all OVER my body -- huge bruises, even on the palms of my hands and the bottom of my feet! -- and TOLD them I was on blood thinner and even showed the desk person the bruises. All the Patient Relations coordinator did was talk to the people at the ER and give me a half-asses apology.
This is a different hospital system, though, so we will see...

I don't want to put a general NSAID allergy because there are times (heart attack, particularly) where I would want them to give me an NSAID (aspirin). I just don't ever want the Toradol because it is a heavy duty NSAID.

True that... although these days they will still occasionally give MI patients aspirin who are allergic to it after putting them through a "desensitization" process (it takes a few days/weeks)... or give them Plavix (a blood thinner that often is given with aspirin but can also be given alone).
But yes, I understand why you would not want to put a blanket NSAID prohibition on your medic-alert bracelet. Good thinking ahead on your part.
When I worked in an ER, I would have been in big doo doo if I had given Toradol (or any med) to someone who said they were allergic or sensitive to it. I hope you write to the appropriate parties at the hospital to complain.

Hey...I know kidney stones are not fun. I was hospitalized 3 times prior to my rny with stones/blockage...and then ended up passing one right after my wls surgery. My wls surgeon actually put me on toradol for a few days. His opinion was that a few doses wouldn't give me an ulcer, and they didn't.
My kidney specialist also told me that toradol (long term) is not good for the kidneys..and when I was hospitalized with them he had me on dilaudid. Dilaudid is very strong, and did help with the pain.
Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.
