Birth Story and question about Fenugreek
So, I know I was mostly a lurker here, but I thought I would share. I love reading everyones birth stories, so I thought I would throw mine out there.
With my first son, I was induced, and I was PRAYING to start labor naturally, but alas, it was not to be. They finally scheduled me to be induced 2 days after my due date. I went into the hospital about 7:30 on Friday evening, and they placed the cervadil. (sp?) As anyone who has had this knows, it's very uncomfortable and between that, the belts for the monitors, and contractions, I didn't sleep all night.
They took me off at about 7:00am and gave me some time to shower, change, and eat breakfast. They started the pitocin about 8:00. I hung in there until about 12noon and finally asked for an epidural. I was pretty proud of myself, since I am such a wuss with pain! I was still only 3 cm when I got my epidural. The Dr. came in and broke my water. At about 3:30, he came in to check me again, and I was only at 4. I was really scared I wasn't going to progress. About an hour later, I started feeling like my epidural was wearing off. With each contraction, I felt a pressure and some pain in my bottom. I told my hubby and he told me to just tell the nurse, to see what she thought. I told her and she said "hmmm, I think I'm going to get the Dr. to check you." I told her I was only 4cm an hour (now, about an hour and a half) ago. She just smiled and told me she would be right back. Dr. came in and checked me - I was 10 cm and +3 station! WHAT?? In an hour?? CRAZY! So, I labored down a little, and the nurse told me to try a test push. I pushed once and she told me "STOP, he is RIGHT there!" and went to get the Dr. I blew through a few contractions while he put is gown and gloves on and 1 and 1/2 pushes later - Samuel Anthony Patrick was born. 7lbs 13 oz, 20 3/4 inches long. With black, long spikey hair like you wouldn't believe.
Sammy is wonderful, healthy, loved by his big brother (Josh) who is 3 and very protective. We are all going through an adjustment period, but it's worth it.
I have always wanted to breast feed. I was unable with my first son, because my milk never came in. He never latched, but I pumped every 2 hours for weeks, and never got more than a few table spoons at a time. This time seems to be going in that direction. I do have some milk, but so little, it would never sustain the little one, who is already up to 3 oz at a feeding. I wondered if anyone has used Fenugreek and what their experience was. Is it ok for the RNY system? My lactation consultant said many of the women she works with have had great results, I just wondered about how it would work in relation to my "plumbing" LoL. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks for reading!

I was producing very well at first and then after 3 weeks my supply started to go down. I took fenugreek along with brewers yeast. (2 tablespoons in light/diet apple juice twice a day- that yeast is nasty stuff!) It kept my supply coming in. I decided to stop after I returned to work because it was very hard to keep up with the pumping (and I still had to supplement with formula). I'm not sure if the success was from the fenugreek or the brewer's yeast so I told you about both. Hope your experience is better. Oh and congrats on the baby.
336lbs 6/19/06 - 198 lbs - 6/19/10 138 lbs gone forever!!!
We have our miracle: Jakob Makhi born 4-15-10; 4 lbs. 10 oz. 22" long.
just wondering how you know that you arent producing enough? Are you basing that on how much milk you are getting when you pump? The reason I ask is because many/most women dont get the same amount of milk via the pump versus latching on. Unfortunately there is no way to tell how much baby is getting via the breast but unless there was an issue noticed by the dr then i wouldnt be so sure that you arent getting enough milk!
I also learned (after freaking out about my own supply) that you dont have to be engorged to have more than enough milk for your baby.
Good luck!!

Yes, that is how I am basing my assumption. Unfortunately, since the little bugger won't latch, I have no way to try it any other way. I am pumping, and while I understand that that's not a great indication, I am literally getting a few drops of milk at each pumping session. I can't imagine that if he latched I would suddenly have enough to sustain him. He's already up to 3 oz of formula every 2.5-3 hrs!!! I keep pumping in hopes that the Fenugreek will help. I've been on the herb for 2 days, and there is certainly no change yet. I have read it can take up to 2 weeks. I hope I can keep trying that long. It's so incredibly disheartening to pump and still not have anything to give your child.
Congrats! On the fenugreek question; I used and it really didn't do much for me. I was taking 9 of the pills a day and it only seemed to produce the beginning milk, but that only made my baby's poop green. I power pump often, but for most days I get 8 oz and that's still 2-3 bottles for my girl so I keep at it. Good luck
