Birth Control Recommendations? Not sure if this was the right forum for this or not
Hi everyone, I wasn't sure where to post this it looks like other people posted things about birht control on here so I figured I would try this. I'm 21 years old and I have never been on birth control before, I have always been worried due to people saying it can cause weight gain and prevent you from losing weight. Im really just needing some recommendations or advice from some people that have tried different ones. I went to my doctors and she recommended the pill since I am losing weight still from the surgery but I dont really want to have to deal with the taking the pills at the same time everyday so if anyone has any advice that would be great especially on bc methods that arent pill form. Thank you everyone.
You are young and can be more fertile after wls. A lot of gals here don't recommend the pill alone for malabsorbtion issues anyway. Condoms. Maybe an iud. Not sure if they will do an iud if you haven't had kids yet though. I really don't recommend depo provera shots if you do want to have children in the near future as they can really screw up your cycles for a year or more after stopping them. It is highly recommended to use two forms of bc after wls. I am sure some others will chime in. The cool thing is that you are here looking for answers before you accidentally become pg! Good for you! And good luck. Shari
I am terrible at taking pills everyday other then my daily vitamin routine. When I was on birth control i used the patch. I LOVED it! I didn't have to take a pill everyday and it didn't make me feel sick or anything. It worked great for me. I stopped taking it, got married and now I am 8 months pregnant!

I hated birth control pills as I'd always forget and have to double up and then that's not as reliable. I did the Nuva Ring for a while and liked that. The first month, I was nauseous and had breakthrough bleeding, but after that it was fine, no issues. I was always told I couldn't do the patch cause you had to weigh under 200 lbs, so if that's an option, that might work for you too.
I use the Evra patch and love it.. but I am having an IUD implanted on Wednesday. (I'm losing my benefits and the IUD was covered and is good for up to 5 years so I figured this was a great alternative instead of paying monthly for patches :) )
You can have the Mirena IUD even if you haven't had children. It's just a bit more painful to have inserted.

I recommend the IUD myself. It works well with WLS..I myself haven't had any worries and don't have to use a 2nd form of birth control. I couldn't do pills considering I got pregnant twice on them, I guess they were children that was just meant to be. With the IUD you don't have to have children already, and it is good for 5 years. I am on my 2nd one. They say when you are ready to try to conceive it only takes a few months after removing. The pain honestly was very little of any. Slight pressure if anything, and they suggest the first few months your partner checks the strings...but besides that I don't have a care in the world. Best of luck with making your decision.
