24 weeks Appt. & my Dr. ALWAYS wants to argue

My Dr.......Lord. Everytime I go there, he wants to prove his knowledge to me or argue with me about stuff that my other Dr's have already told me. Two weeks ago, it was about my GD test. We already talked about it two visits previous and he said he would have me do a 5 point test (Basically take my blood sugar readings 5 times a day for 2 weeks). Then we talk about it at my appt. 2 weeks ago and he's asking me again why I can't do the glucola. "Cuz I'll get sick as a dog and RNY patients don't process sugar the same anymore and the results won't be accurate". (But I wasn't doing it cuz I'd get sick as a dog and I'm not doing that to myself) So, he proceeds to argue about a previous gastric bypass patient did the test and blah de dah and that the test was accurate, yada yada. I don't care about the other patient. This is me we're talking about and I already thought we had it discussed that I was doing the 5 point test. So he wrote me for the blood sugar monitor and all the other stuff I needed, gave me the BS log and I went home.

I was supposed to come back in 2 weeks (Today) to give him back the blood sugar results I'd been doing and I was supposed to start my growth ultrasounds on the baby at 24 weeks, so that was supposed to be starting today. Well, he said the BS results were fine (knew they would be) and I ask him about the ultrasound and he's like, "Oh, well we'll just have to do that next week cuz my tech does that" Lord. Gas ain't cheap and it's 30 miles to his office......BUT.......fine.

So on my way out, I forgot to ask him about running a vitamin D level on me again because my bones have really been hurting a lot and I'm pretty sure my levels are still low. They've been low for 2 years now. I was concerned because I think I'm taking the max amount of calcium with vitamin D that I can take and I'm pretty sure it's not doing it's job to raise my level and I NEED to know what else I can use to supplement my vitamin D level. He then proceeds to tell me (argue again) that vitamin D deficiency doesn't cause bone pain. I'm like, oh my God you've got to be kidding me? He's gonna argue with me about this? What 2 of my others Dr's have already confirmed to me? Like I'm gonna lie about something so trivial as bone pain and vit. D deficiency?? LOL So I said, "I'm just telling you what 2 of my other Dr's have already told me" (Plus I've looked it up enough times to know). I just simply wanted to know what other supplement I could take. Just ****** me off to have to freakin' walk on egg shells and not know what the next thing he's gonna argue about will be.....and I had a hard enough time finding a Dr. to even take me in the first place with all the high risk issues I have.

So I get home and look up vitamin D deficiency again. I found something quite interesting and some of ya'll may be interested in it as well (if you're vitamin D deficient). This is what I found:

Vitamin D deficiency can cause muscle aches, muscle weakness, and bone pain (see, wasn't lying about that!) at any age.

Vitamin D deficiency in a pregnant woman causes deficiency in the fetus. Occasionally, deficiency severe enough to cause maternal osteomalacia results in rickets with metaphyseal lesions in neonates. In young infants, rickets causes softening of the entire skull (craniotabes). When palpated, the occiput and posterior parietal bones feel like a ping pong ball. In older infants with rickets, sitting and crawling are delayed, as is fontanelle closure; there is bossing of the skull and costochondral thickening. Costochondral thickening can look like beadlike prominences along the lateral chest wall (rachitic rosary). In children 1 to 4 yr, epiphyseal cartilage at the lower ends of the radius, ulna, tibia, and fibula enlarge; kyphoscoliosis develops, and walking is delayed. In older children and adolescents, walking is painful; in extreme cases, deformities such as bowlegs and knock-knees develop.

Tetany is caused by hypocalcemia and may accompany infantile or adult vitamin D deficiency. Tetany may cause paresthesias of the lips, tongue, and fingers; carpopedal and facial spasm; and, if very severe, seizures. Maternal deficiency can cause tetany in neonates.

Osteomalacia predisposes to fractures. In the elderly, hip fractures may result from only minimal trauma.

And yes, I printed him up a copy and will take it to him on my next visit!! I'm SO frustrated!!! I'm supposed to go back to the maternal fetal specialist next week too for her to check on baby Kenzie again. Hopefully everything will still be ok and still no sign of Down's! My weight has come on too! I'm now in the positive numbers for weight gain at +5! I'm SO glad to have gained some!

UGH! My dr has the same issues with me doing the GD test. He acted like he agreed with me, and then set me up for the glucola test anyways! Then when I went back he said he would just have to 'assume I have GD' and proceed like that. WTF. I called my surgeons office and still havent heard back from them. Its pretty frustrating. I know I dont have it, but thats not the point. Also, when I asked about checking my vit levels again, he blew them off. GRRRR!

Super proud mommy to Dylan, Owen and Sophia Brianne!

similar experience with one of the docs in my practice. My reg doc was on vacation so i saw another doc in the practice. I had already discussed doing the fasting BS test with my reg doctor. when i went in he was ready to give me the GTT paperwork and i said no way. He then said he will just set me up for visits like i AM diabetic (i thought WTF) but i didnt care. I asked him to please call my reg doc on vacation or call him as soon as he gets back because he has done alot of research for me. I DID get a call a week later to come pick up the RIGHT blood work paper work. Today i saw my regular doc and he explained to me that sometimes people outright REFUSE to do the GTT for no reason and they usually do that weekly sonos to make it a little more annoying for people *****fuse the test for no reason. My doc took that out of my file and told me that i shouldnt be tourtured with weekly sonos when i have a MEDICAL reason for not taking the test. especially since my fasting tests came out great...

I do have low vitamin D levels...  have had them since probably before my WLS, but having had WLS made them plummet so much more.  I've been slowly working on them, and it has been expensive and took a long time, but I now have near-normal levels!  (They are still a bit low, so I am still hyper-supplementing)

I am a DSer, so I do not absorb calcium or any fat soluble vitamins (ADEK) well at all.  Because of that, I have to take 200,000 IU of DRY vitamin D every single day, as well as 3,000 mg calcium CITRATE every single day.  (I also add in magnesium & vitamin K2, to aid in the absorption of the calcium & D).

I buy my vitamin D online from vitalady.com  It is called Bio-Tech.  I take the 50,000 IU pill (4x per day).

When I first got pregnant, I went over all this with my OB, she tested my vitamin D level (it was low) so she did some research on me taking that much D while pregnant...  she came back and said she was okay with it...  if I'm not getting it in my blood, the baby isn't getting it either!

Maybe you can try to take vitalady's vitamin D?

I know with my vitamin levels I have had to supplement pretty heavily, and my OB still cringes when she hears how much vitamin A I am taking (50,000 IU)!  But I talked it over with my bariatric surgeon, and he said that the baby won't get toxic amounts if I'm not getting toxic amounts...  (Same advice my OB gave me for the vitamin D, but she was leery of approving me to take that much vitamin A...  doesn't want it to come back and kick her in the butt!)

I know how much it sucks having a doctor who doesn't listen to you, and for that I feel really bad for you!  I'm sorry and I wish I could make it better for ya!

But I just wanted to tell you that if you are not absorbing your vitamin D, your baby isn't getting it either, so I would highly reccommend that you up your vitamin intake of it.

Amanda already mentioned it..... I was approved (told) to take 100,000 IU of vitamin D (dry, from Vitalady - 2 x 50,000 IU a day) while pregnant.

I'm sure if it didn't help they'd let me take more.....

And if you're D is that low have you checked your AE & K ?  Just a chance your RNY is giving you more fat malabsorption than you bargained for.

Sorry your doctor argues with you!  If  possible I'd find a new doctor!

Take Care,

Cindy
