So I am 30 weeks pregnant and got my blood test results back. I called my doctor beacuse i was frantic and wanted answers. (I went to the lab and got my results before they were sent to the doctor). Anyway, My White Blood Cells are in the high range and my red blood cells are low.
Everything is off. Either too high or too low!

I have taken all of my vitamins everyday like i should. All results point to anemia and lack of iron however my doctor is saying that everything is okay and that the hemoglobin is what he is most concerned with and that is in the normal range. i am frustrated because a part of me feels like I should have gone to someone more experienced in gastric bypass pregnancies. I like my doctor but i am worried i am not getting enough folic acid or b-12 which i take already. I know our bodies are different.

I wonder if it's too late to start increasing my iron and B-12?

I was told that my B12 levels would probably have to be adjusted throughout the pregnancy but I have chronic B12 issues.

You can always get a copy of your lab work and send it to your bypass surgeon and see what they say. I have done that on a few occasions and they are always happy to review them  and call me if there is a concern. I also have an e-mail for my NUT and she will look them over and tell me what vitamins if any to add.

Good luck!

If he said everything is ok, then don't worry. When my blood work comes back, everything is off. But the values are sometimes not quite off enough to make the Dr. worry about anything, even though one says high or another says low. He would've told you if you were anemic and would've either given you iron supplements or told you to increase any iron you were taking.

If you're getting 800mcg or more of folic acid a day, then you're fine on that. If you're taking at least 1,000 mcg of B-12 a week, you're good with that too......unless your blood results show you are low. I take 1,000mcg of B-12 a day and that's about the max you can take a day without it being a little too much (without a Dr's order). You need around 40 of iron a day if your blood results are normal and your Dr. didn't say you were anemic. Your prenatal should provide pretty close to that. Mine has 36 and it's been fine in correcting my slight anemia that I had at the beginning of my pregnancy and my iron was good at the WIC office about 8 weeks after that so it must be enough so far at 24 weeks.

You really need to have your Dr. advise you on self-increasing your iron and B-12 (depending on how much you're on now). Forward your labs to your surgeon and get their opinion and tell them how far along you are. They may have different recommendations, but you really need a Dr's advice and not "self-prescribe", especially since your Dr. said your labs were ok.

Number one reason I HATE giving lab results to patients.

YOU can't analyze lab results. A high or low on that "typical" range doesn't mean you have issues. It depends on past results and one or two points out of range doesn't mean an issue.

Also, a low RBC doesn't mean anemia.

Amenia is determined by counting Hemoglobin, Total Iron Binding Capacity and other Iron studies.

Trust your doc.....and try not to panic.

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

Thanks everyone...it's these  dang hormones i swear

I feel better now and not going to stress out or be frustrated anymore. I should know better working in the medical field not to do this but sometimes i can't  help it.
