Fertility Questions?

Hello.

I just got back from my OBGYN visit and I talked to her about conceiving after my weight loss is complete. I had told her that I would like to be placed back on Metformin as I have PCOS to help with conceiving. My Hubby and I have tried now for 10 years to conceive, but never sucessfully did (I feel because of my weight and the PCOS).

I only had a period maybe twice  year and I did not ovulate at all. I am not even sure I am ovulating now. I have lost over 120 pounds and I have had a normal 28-30 cycle since August of 2009. I have tried those ovualtion answer tests and I did have an LH surge last month with the cervical mucus and all, but then I was told by another fellow PCOS pal that the Ovulation tests don't always give accurate reults for women with PCOS.

I had my RNY labs done last month and my insulin resistance was checked. It was within normal range! This made me so happy, but my OBGYN is now telling me that I shouldn't need Metformin if I am no longer insulin resistant and having normal cycles. I guess after 10 years of trying I just don't feel I can get pregnant anyways so I may need the help of the meds, maybe even Clomid. How can I tell if I am ovulating for sure if I have PCOS? Is the OBGYN correct? This was my 1st time seeing her. I wasn't convinced. I just want things to work. I have tried so hard to make a change and fix me.

Hi! First, if insurance will cover it, I would skip the OB and go straight to the RE. Although ovulation test strips can be hard to follow with pcos, I would probably trust a true positive opk. Have you ever taken your temperature daily to check for ovulation. That may be something you should do while you are waiting to ttc again. Also, be sure to use another form of protection if you are still losing weight and not ready to become pg. A lot of us are much more fertile after surgery. Has your husband been tested?? I have pcos with ir and hubby has really low sperm counts. My cycles regulated to about a 35-38 day cycle and my RE put me on metformin. It is not necessarily used for insulin issues with ttc, but as a way to regulate your hormones. Both of my babies were conceived on metformin after 5 years of trying and several attempts at clomid and IUI. Don't give up hope. I have been blessed with 2 beautiful babies. There are lots of women here that have pcos that have babies now. You just need to be educated and really insist on seeing a specialist. Good luck! Shari

beleive me your doc might just be right..... i went through fertility treatment to have my son... years of no period and lack of ovulation. my hubby and i never used birth control and i never was pregnant with my pcos issues.... after loosing weight with surgery even though they tell you your fertility can come right back i just didnt beleive it..... my periods though not entirely regular came back and blammo 7 months out of surgery i found out i was pregnant.

Not saying that this is definatly what will happen for you but i say when you start trying give a good 6 month try the old fashioned way :) before getting yourself into all those expensive doctors and treatments. if no miricals happen then i say go forward but with an RE

For this pregnancy, my first after RNY, I insisted on Clomid, and the midwife I was seeing gave me the lowest dose. With my daughter it took quite a few months of Clomid. But, this time I got pregnant the first cycle with twins! I did insist on at least the Clomid. She was a bit resistant at first but said that it was fine in the end. Maybe try advocating one more time before you see an RE- they are expensive and time consuming and all. The Clomid will help if you might be ovulating irregularly. And it may help alleviate some anxiety. TTC with past problems is always so stressful. Good luck.

Chances are that if you are having regular cycles, you ARE ovulating now.  Because of this, you may not need any meds now.  I would try for 4 - 6 months before going the meds route again.  You may be pleasantly surprised.  Many women on here who needed meds prior to surgery did not need them after the surgery.

Ok, just my story since it sounds alot like yours!

I have very bad PCOS, I never got a period more then two months in a row in my life. My husband and I tried for two years to get pregnant with no luck and then had to use fertility treatments and got pregnant with triplets. After they where born we never used any birthcontol and I never got pregnant for almost six years, I had my surgery and lost 80 lbs and my period started coming regular like you said yours has, I had to stop taking the Met b/c it was causing me to have major sugar lows and I was feeling shakey and sick all the time (so be careful if you decide to try it again and your labs are normal)

For me, we where not really trying, but after five regular cycles I didn't get a period and thought my body was going back to it's old ways, but I was pregnant!

Have you tried at all on your own since your cycle started up normal?

Good luck with whatever you decide, and if you need to talk, feel free to email me!

Honestly? I got preggo twice with not a problem. I loss the first one (I think it was because of thyroid issues) and got preggo again no problem. I had HORRIBLE PCOS before surgery. I would give it a try without help for a little bit. Hubby and I figured we would need help but turns out I am really fertile.

I am pregnant with #4 and have PCOS. This pregnancy is definately a result of weight loss surgery. (I was 7 1/2 months out) and I had not taken metformin since right before my surgery. The last pregnancy was a result of just losing 50 lbs on Nutri System ( I was on metformin for that one) .   I think your chances of conceiving  now are probably very good  without any medication to help. Good luck!!
